'Dueling Duchamps'

2010 Parts from broken bikes, secondhand stools, glockenspiel note bars, reclaimed wood, various fixings, hillbilly paraphernalia.
Dueling Duchamps was an interactive, musical art installation created for Bristol Cycle Festival.
It consisted of two replicas of Marcel Duchamp’s sculpture ‘Bicycle Wheel’.
When people rotated the bike wheels, glockenspiel keys between the spokes produced a short melody from the piece of music ‘Dueling Banjos’.
The sculptures could be ‘played’ in a call and response fashion with increasing speed to mimic the original tune or simply spun at random to make a jangling racket.
Two red-necks accompanied the installation to supervise and to demonstrated the contraptions.
